Salim Al Nur: Tha’ Al-Wilif

This is one of the most important recordings I had the privilege of being part of. This is the last CD by the great late Salim al Nur, an Iraqi Israeli composer that have made his mark and took the Arabic music a few steps forward. I recommend reading more about him and hearing all of his recorded music.

“SALIM AL NUR (born in Baghdad in 1920) started composing as a teenager and his song Ayyuha as-Saqi (1937) was performed by the famous Iraqi singer Salima Murad.

The album Al Nur makes all his unrecorded music available for world audiences for the first time. The production was initiated by Dr. Yehuda Kamari, a physician and an Oud player.

This recording includes five instrumental pieces (four in the Sama’i genre) and three Iraqi songs.”

The Egyptian singer Ragaa Abdu sang Al Nur’s composition Tha’ Al-Wilif in her performances in Baghdad and Cairo, but this song was never recorded.

Elias SHASHA: a unique interpreter and performer of Iraqi vocal music, was born in Baghdad, where he studied with the renowned musician Sharif Muhyi al-Din. He joined the Arab Broadcasting Authority Orchestra in Israel both as singer and violinist.
